Quick answer: Well pressure tank size is not chosen by house size or number of bathrooms. It’s chosen by two numbers: your pump’s flow rate (GPM) and your pressure switch setting. A pump under ¾ HP needs about 1 minute of run time per cycle (ESP I); a pump ¾ HP or larger needs about 2 minutes (ESP II). Undersize the tank and you get short cycling, which is the single most common cause of premature pump failure.
Why tank size isn’t about house size
Most sizing advice online tells you to pick a tank based on the number of bathrooms or people in the house. That’s backwards. A pressure tank’s only job is to give your pump enough water storage that it doesn’t turn on and off every few seconds. The variable that actually drives sizing is how fast your pump delivers water and how long it needs to run each cycle to avoid short cycling, not how many fixtures are in the house.
House size and fixture count matter for choosing the pump (see our well pump guides). Once the pump is chosen, the tank size follows from the pump’s GPM and horsepower, using the method below.
The number on the tank label is not the water you actually get
This is the part almost every buyer gets wrong: a tank labeled “32 gallon” does not give you 32 gallons of usable water. Pressure tanks work on compressed air: as the pump fills the tank, air trapped in the top compresses and pushes water out through the bladder. Only the water that moves between your pressure switch’s cut-in and cut-out points is usable. That’s called drawdown, and it’s typically 25–35% of the tank’s total volume, depending on the switch setting.
Real example from Amtrol’s official specs: a WX-203 is labeled a 32-gallon tank, but at a 40/60 psi switch setting it delivers only 8.6 gallons of drawdown (about 27% of the labeled volume). That gap is why “just buy the biggest tank” advice leads people to undersize without realizing it.
Two protection levels: ESP I vs ESP II
Amtrol’s official sizing method (the same logic other manufacturers follow) splits tanks into two minimum run-time targets based on pump horsepower:

The logic: a bigger pump moves more water per minute, so if the tank is too small the pump satisfies the entire drawdown volume in just a few seconds and shuts off almost immediately, then starts again seconds later. Repeated over and over, this is short cycling, and it’s the number one cause of premature pump and pressure switch failure. This is also why a bigger pump doesn’t just need a bigger tank because it moves more water. It needs a disproportionately bigger tank because it also needs more run time per cycle.
Quick-reference sizing chart
This table (based on Amtrol’s official Well-X-Trol sizing method) tells you which tank model satisfies ESP I or ESP II at each pump flow rate and switch setting. Where you see “×2” or “×3,” it means multiple tanks plumbed in parallel are needed: a single tank isn’t enough at that flow rate.

How to size your tank in 3 steps
Step 1: Find your pump’s flow rate (GPM)

Step 2: Check your pump’s horsepower
¾ HP or under → use the ESP I columns. Over ¾ HP → use the ESP II columns. This one distinction changes your tank size more than almost any other factor: the same 10 GPM pump needs a 34-gallon WX-205 at ESP I but a 62-gallon WX-251 at ESP II.
Step 3: Match to your pressure switch setting

Higher pressure setting = less usable water from the same tank
Here’s a detail most sizing guides skip: raising your switch’s cut-out pressure shrinks the drawdown you get from the same tank. Take the Amtrol WX-250 (44 gallons): its official drawdown is 13.6 gallons at 30/50 psi but only 10.4 gallons at 50/70 psi, a 24% drop from the identical tank. If you’re running a higher pressure setting for a multi-story house or a booster application, don’t reuse a tank sized at 30/50. Go up a size.

Common sizing mistakes
- Sizing by bathroom count instead of pump GPM/HP. Two houses with the same 3 bathrooms can need very different tanks if one has a ½ HP pump and the other has a 1.5 HP pump.
- Assuming the labeled gallon size is usable water. It isn’t. Only the drawdown fraction is. See the table above.
- Replacing a failed tank with the same size without checking the pump. If the pump was ever upgraded, the old tank size may now be undersized and causing short cycling.
- Ignoring the switch setting when replacing a tank. A tank sized correctly for 30/50 can leave you short at 50/70.
FAQ
Can I use a bigger tank than the chart recommends?
Yes. Going larger than the minimum never causes short cycling; it just costs more upfront and takes more floor space. The chart gives you the minimum size for adequate run time, not a maximum.
Do I need one tank or can I use two smaller tanks?
Either works if the combined drawdown meets the requirement. Multiple tanks plumbed in parallel (marked “×2” or “×3” in the chart) are common when a single tank of sufficient size isn’t practical to install or transport.
Does tank size affect water pressure?
No. Pressure is set by your pressure switch’s cut-in/cut-out points, not by tank size. Tank size only affects how long the pump runs and how often it cycles.
How do I know my current tank is undersized?
