How to Choose Between a Shallow Well Pump and an Irrigation Pump
Suction Depth: Know Your Water Source
Suction depth is the biggest differentiator. Shallow well pumps pull from wells where the water sits less than 25 feet below the pump. Convertible models stretch that to 90 feet with an ejector kit, like the Acquaer Shallow/Deep Well Jet Pump. Irrigation pumps, on the other hand, are surface movers: they transfer water from a pond, lake, or rain barrel and rarely handle suction lift beyond 20 feet. Check out our complete well pump guide to match your well depth to the right pump type.
If your well is under 25 feet, a standard shallow well jet pump like the Acquaer Shallow Well Jet Pump,Cast Iron or the Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump will serve you well. They offer enough suction for most residential wells.
Flow Rate and Pressure for Your Irrigation Needs
Flow rate determines how many sprinkler heads you can run at once. For small lawns, a pump delivering around 1200 GPH is typically sufficient. If you need to cover a larger property, the AQUASTRONG 1.5 HP Shallow Well Jet/Centrifugal can push up to 4250 GPH, handling multiple zones with ease. Pressure matters too: many shallow well pumps include an automatic pressure switch that maintains 20 to 40 PSI for consistent home use.
Many homeowners choose a shallow well pump with a pressure tank, such as the Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump with 5-gallon tank, to maintain steady water pressure. This combo works well for both irrigation and indoor use.
Build Materials and Durability
Pump housings are typically cast iron, stainless steel, or thermoplastics. Cast iron handles heavy-duty use and dissipates heat well, while stainless steel resists corrosion near ponds and lakes. The Red Lion RL-SPRK150 Sprinkler/Irrigation Pump uses a rugged cast iron casing and a thermoplastic impeller, a proven combination for years of service. Look for thermal overload protection as well; it prevents the motor from burning out during dry runs. If you are still unsure, our main well pumps page lists all types.
Installation and Portability
Consider where the pump will live. A fixed installation benefits from a pressure tank and pre-set pressure switch, like the LEO Shallow Well Pump with Pressure Tank 1.5HP, which is factory-assembled for quick setup. If you plan to move the pump between gardens or seasonal properties, choose a lightweight model with a carry handle and hose adapters. The Acquaer 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump is a portable option that still delivers solid flow.
Also consider priming requirements. Some pumps are self-priming, while others need manual filling before the first use. The 1HP Irrigation Pump, 1110 GPH requires filling the pump wet end with water before startup, so plan for that step.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the choice between a shallow well pump and an irrigation pump comes down to your water source and how you use it. If your home draws from a well and needs consistent pressure, the Acquaer Shallow Well Jet Pump,Cast Iron is a dependable automatic option with dual voltage flexibility. If you need high-volume sprinkler output for a large lawn, the Red Lion RL-SPRK150 Sprinkler/Irrigation Pump delivers robust flow and cast iron durability. Either way, you will have water where you need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between a shallow well pump and an irrigation pump?
A shallow well pump lifts water from a well up to about 25 feet and often includes a pressure switch for household use. An irrigation pump moves large volumes of water from surface sources like ponds or tanks at lower pressure, which makes it ideal for sprinklers and lawn watering.
Can I use an irrigation pump for my home water supply?
Not typically. Most irrigation pumps lack the self-priming and pressure control features needed for consistent household pressure. A shallow well jet pump with a pressure tank is a better fit. See our guide to well pumps for pressure tanks for compatible configurations.
How deep can a shallow well jet pump pull water?
Standard shallow well jet pumps reach depths up to 25 feet. Convertible models, like the Acquaer Shallow/Deep Well Jet Pump, can pull from up to 90 feet when paired with an ejector kit. For deeper wells, the 4” 1HP Deep Well Submersible Pump 750W 110-130V may be a better option.
