Buying Guide: What to Look for in a Jet Pump
Choosing the right jet pump involves more than just picking the highest horsepower. You need to match the pump to your water source, flow requirements, and installation constraints. Here are the key factors we consider when evaluating jet pumps.
Horsepower and Flow Rate
Horsepower (HP) directly affects how much water the pump can move. For most homes and gardens, a 1 HP to 1.5 HP pump is sufficient. Look at the flow rate, measured in gallons per hour (GPH) or gallons per minute (GPM). For example, the HoldwellS 115V Shallow Well Jet Pump with 5 Gallon delivers 1320 GPH, which is excellent for irrigation and domestic use.
Higher flow rates mean faster filling and better pressure, but they also consume more electricity. Consider your typical water demand. A large garden or multiple fixtures will benefit from a pump with a higher GPH rating, while a small cabin might do fine with a lower output.
Suction Depth and Lift Head
Suction depth tells you how far below the pump the water level can be, while lift head indicates how high the pump can push water vertically. For shallow wells, a suction depth of 20 to 26 feet is typical. The HoldwellS 115V Shallow Well Jet Pump offers a 26-foot suction lift and a 164-foot max head, making it versatile for both shallow wells and multi-story homes.
If your well is deeper than 25 feet, you may need a convertible jet pump or a submersible pump. Always measure your well’s depth and static water level before purchasing. Our guide on the best well pump for dug well can help you decide if a jet pump is right for your situation.
Build Quality and Materials
Jet pumps are often installed outdoors or in damp environments, so durability matters. Look for pumps with cast iron or stainless steel housings, as they resist corrosion and withstand physical stress. The Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump features a stainless steel casing and aluminum motor housing, ensuring longevity even in humid conditions.
Also, check the mechanical seal. A carbon-ceramic seal prevents water leakage and extends the pump’s life. Pumps with thermal overload protection automatically shut off if the motor overheats, preventing burnout and saving you from costly repairs.
Automatic Operation and Pressure Control
Many modern jet pumps come with a pressure switch that automatically turns the pump on and off based on water demand. This is convenient and energy-efficient. For example, the 1.5 HP Shallow Well Pump with Pressure Tank from MOVECOM starts at 19 PSI and stops at 38 PSI, maintaining steady pressure without constant cycling.
Some models include a pressure tank, which stores water and reduces the frequency of pump starts. This not only saves energy but also extends the pump’s lifespan. If you are upgrading an existing system, ensure the pressure switch settings match your tank’s requirements. For more on this, see our article on well pumps for pressure tanks.
Final Thoughts
After reviewing the top jet pumps, we believe the HoldwellS 115V Shallow Well Jet Pump with 5 Gallon offers the best combination of power, durability, and value for most homeowners, while the Goulds Pump J5S Shallow Well Jet Pump stands out for those who prioritize brand reliability and are willing to invest in a proven workhorse. Whether you need a pump for garden irrigation or whole-house water supply, both options deliver dependable performance. Choose the one that fits your specific needs and enjoy a steady water flow all year round.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a shallow well jet pump and a deep well jet pump?
Shallow well jet pumps are designed for wells with water depths up to 25 feet, while deep well jet pumps can handle depths up to 100 feet or more. The main difference is the ejector assembly: deep well pumps have the ejector located down in the well, whereas shallow well pumps have it built into the pump body. For most residential wells, a shallow well jet pump is sufficient if the water level is within 25 feet of the surface.
How do I prime a jet pump?
Priming is essential before starting a jet pump. Remove the priming plug and fill the pump casing and suction pipe with water until it overflows. Then replace the plug and turn on the pump. Some models, like the Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump, are not self-priming, so you must fill them manually. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damaging the pump.
Can a jet pump be used for irrigation?
Absolutely. Jet pumps are excellent for garden irrigation, lawn sprinklers, and agricultural use. They provide high flow rates and can draw water from shallow wells, ponds, or rain barrels. For large irrigation systems, consider a higher horsepower model like the AQUASTRONG 1.5 HP Shallow Well Jet/Centrifugal, which delivers 4250 GPH to cover extensive areas.
What maintenance does a jet pump require?
Regular maintenance includes checking the pressure switch settings, cleaning the inlet screen, and ensuring the pump is free of debris. In winter, if the pump is not in use, drain all water to prevent freezing damage. Periodically inspect the mechanical seal for leaks and replace it if necessary. With proper care, a jet pump can last for many years.
