Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Shallow Well Pump for Your Sprinkler System
Selecting the right pump involves more than just picking the highest horsepower. You need to match the pump’s capabilities to your well depth, sprinkler zone size, and water demand. Here are the key criteria we used in our evaluations.
Horsepower and Flow Rate
Horsepower directly affects how much water the pump can move and at what pressure. For a typical residential sprinkler system, 1 HP to 1.5 HP is usually sufficient. Look for a pump that delivers at least 10–15 gallons per minute (GPM) at your desired pressure. The 1HP Shallow Well Jet Pump from AIDPATH, for example, pushes 20 GPM and reaches 164 feet of head, making it ideal for multiple sprinkler zones.
If you have a larger lawn or need to run several sprinklers simultaneously, consider a 1.5 HP or 2 HP model. The WASSERMANN Centrifugal Pump 1.5 HP delivers up to 66 GPM, which can handle extensive irrigation. But remember: higher horsepower often means higher electricity consumption, so match the pump to your actual needs.
Build Quality and Durability
A sprinkler pump runs for hours during the growing season, so it must withstand continuous use and exposure to the elements. Pumps with cast iron volutes or stainless steel casings resist corrosion and wear far better than plastic alternatives. The Star JHU15S and Goulds J10S are both built with cast iron bodies and are known for decades of reliable service. For a more affordable option, the Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump uses a stainless steel casing that holds up well in damp environments.
Also check for thermal overload protection and dry run protection. These features automatically shut off the motor if it overheats or runs without water, preventing costly damage. Most pumps in our lineup include such safeguards.
Automatic vs Manual Operation
Automatic pumps with a pressure switch and tank are the most convenient for sprinkler systems. They maintain constant pressure and turn on and off as needed. The FOTING 1.5HP Shallow Well Pump with Pressure Tank and the Aquastrong 115V Shallow Well Garden Pump with Pressure Tank are excellent choices if you want a set it and forget it solution. They start at 20 PSI and shut off at 40 PSI, keeping your sprinklers ready.
Manual pumps require you to turn them on before watering and off when done. They are simpler and often cheaper, but you will need to remember to switch them. The SHANGDA Water Transfer Pump is a budget friendly manual option that works well for occasional use. For a deeper dive on pressure tank setups, read our guide on well pump kits with pressure tanks.
Voltage and Installation Flexibility
Most shallow well pumps come in 115V or 230V versions, and some offer dual voltage. Dual voltage models like the Acquaer Shallow Well Jet Pump and the AQUASTRONG 1.5 HP Shallow Well Jet/Centrifugal let you adapt to your existing electrical supply without hiring an electrician. Check your breaker panel to see what voltage you have available before buying.
Installation is another factor. Pumps with pre assembled pressure switches, tanks, and garden hose adapters save time. The WASSERMANN Centrifugal Pump includes a dual voltage motor and a straightforward setup process. If you are planning a complete system, our well pump kit for home guide can help you piece everything together.
Final Thoughts
After reviewing ten of the best shallow well pumps for sprinkler systems, we recommend the 1HP Shallow Well Jet Pump-115/230V Irrigation Pump from AIDPATH for its excellent balance of performance, build quality, and value. It delivers strong flow and includes a detachable flow pressure switch that eliminates the need for a separate tank. For those who want a premium, American made pump that will last for generations, the Star JHU15S High Pressure 1-1/2 HP Shallow Well is a standout with its cast iron construction and high pressure output. Whichever you choose, ensure your pump is properly sized for your well and sprinkler layout, and you will enjoy a lush, hassle free lawn for years to come.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a shallow well pump for a sprinkler system?
Yes, shallow well pumps are ideal for sprinkler systems if your water source is within 25 feet of the surface. They provide enough pressure and flow to run multiple sprinkler zones. Just make sure the pump’s GPM rating matches your sprinkler heads’ total demand.
How do I know what size pump I need for my sprinklers?
Calculate the total flow rate required by adding up the GPM of all sprinkler heads that will run simultaneously. Then choose a pump that delivers at least that flow at the pressure your system needs. For most residential lawns, a 1 HP to 1.5 HP pump is sufficient. Check our well pump for pressure tank for more details on sizing.
Do I need a pressure tank with a shallow well pump for sprinklers?
Not always, but a pressure tank improves convenience by maintaining constant pressure and reducing pump cycling. Many modern pumps, like the AIDPATH model, include a flow switch that works without a tank. However, if you want automatic on/off operation, a tank based system is easier to manage.
What is the difference between a jet pump and a centrifugal pump for sprinklers?
Jet pumps use an ejector to create suction and are better for deeper wells (up to 25 feet). Centrifugal pumps rely on an impeller and are best for shallow wells or surface water. For sprinkler systems, both types work well, but jet pumps generally provide higher pressure. The WASSERMANN Centrifugal Pump and Goulds J10S Jet Pump are good examples of each.
